Description
Widespread fires within urban environments and forests is a major problem that affects the many countries both economically and ecologically. While current fire fighting techniques have improved over the past decades, there is a need for an early fire warning and fighting infrastructure that is well dispersed throughout the globe. Here we propose a business model in which we utilize existing Airbus assets for aerial fire fighting with minimal and/or no change in the air-frame OEM design. With the design and implementation of a modular fire fighting system into the aircraft , we aim to implement a low cost modular system that can be stationed within each airport for use during emergencies; whereby the service can be requested by clients in need.

Hi everyone, we're glad the wait is finally over and we're over the moon to be through to round 3! Firstly, however, it has been wonderful developing our idea amongst all of yours. Please stay passionate about your ideas, we found many very intriguing; but most of all, we've enjoyed the chance getting to know you (unfortunately not personally), learning about your cultures, universities and the scope of the aerospace society worldwide, it's impressive! Maybe one day we'll work together on projects in the future. We look forward to it! Secondly, thank you to Airbus FYI, we are very grateful for this opportunity and very much looking forward to participating in round 3. Also, a big thank you to our mentors, RMIT, family and friends for your ongoing support, we'll need it even more so now ;) We too, are looking forward to meeting the Fly Your Ideas team and the other four finalists in Toulouse! Hopefully we can make it a memorable experience, for not only ourselves and the competition, but the entire aerospace community. We, as Aquarius, are very passionate about finding a global, collaborative solution to firefighting. It is crucial to start engaging with these issues globally, together as one; we are determined to do our absolute best in taking this opportunity to do so. With many thanks, Team Aquarius

Great idea! I come from Northern Ontario, Canada, a place where forest fires are a (very) big deal. The Ontario Government maintains a fleet of (among others) CL415s DHC2-MKIII, and DHC6 amphibious water bombers. Unlike Australia, Ontario's forest lands are 30% water! So, smaller A/C making repeated attacks are practical, plus, the A/C were all manufactured in Ontario, so there is a political / economic benefit as well. I like the idea of standardising the mission load on pallets and hanging the business end off the ramp. I am really curious to the mid-air re-watering in action. A whole new training challenge for the fire fighting pilots! as if the job is not hairy enough :-) Curiously, Airbus presented this on their intranet (article about the Fly Your Ideas competition) as being adaptable to "a commercial airliner", though I did not see any mention of that in your paper. I am guessing it was an error. However, with a modified cargo door and palletised tanks and pumps, it could work. All the best!

Hello Zachary, Awesome to hear you are from Canada! Where in Northern Ontario are you from? Anil lived Kingston and Kerry lived in Guelph, and we will get Philipp there soon. Our idea is a supplementary effort aerial firefighting currently been undertaken worldwide. If you missed the facebook live stream of our presentation, we have been told that it may be posted on youtube in the next few weeks. The idea that we presented is loosely based off the 2015 paper you mentioned. For the Fly Your Ideas Competition we expanded the idea onto a global scale using the A400M. Also, good pick up on the commercial airliner mention in the article, we also believe it is a mistake. Thanks, from Team Aquarius (Anil, Philipp and Kerry)

We recorded the footage for our team video over the weekend, and have attached a sneak peak below. Whilst filming we received unexpected but appreciated artistic input from a nearby student and had a mysterious visit from a team of friendly high rise window washers.

And... thanks to the Royal Air Force, we were also allowed onto the plane! It was a wonderful experience talking to the crew, as well as the captain of the Atlas. We have a lot of respect for what they do and that they had time for us, to listen to our idea. Maybe they'll even fly Aquarius one day ;) This photo is of us: Philipp, Jordan and Kerry (left to right), in the cockpit of the A400M.

Anil with our baby yellow A400M in front of its real daddy ;) As a group we built and painted a large (but in comparison very small) Revell kit A400M and brought it with us to the airshow. This way it was much easier to explain our concept of how we believe the A400M could become the perfect aircraft for aerial firefighting.

Guys this must be the best picture on teamline! We're curious about your idea, we were looking through Anil's paper and were wondering whether you are proposing to dedicate aircraft to firefighting as permanent resources or on a temporary basis?

Hello Team SkyVision, Thank you for your comment. In a nutshell, we are proposing a modular aerial firefighting system that can be installed into any aircraft. Whether it be cargo or a civilian aircraft, the implementation of this modular system is to minimise, or in our case, prevent any changes in the OEM design of aircraft platform. Hence. temporarily converting the aircraft into a temporary firefighting platform (i.e. military-to-civil power platform). Please have a look at our paper. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/273124144_Aerial_Bushfire_Quencher_C-17_Conversion_for_Fire_Fighting_Operations Please let me know if you have any questions. Kind Regards, Anil

Thank you to everyone who came and visited us at Avalon 2017 yesterday! It was wonderful sharing our idea with you all, hearing your feedback and support. It was also cool meeting Martin Bean, the Vice-Chancellor and President of RMIT. A very kind and open gentleman, who was happy to take part in a selfie too!

G'day Swing, thanks for the feedback! It's Airbus' relatively new military transport aircraft, designed as a tactical aircraft with strategic capabilities.

Our research into wildfires across the globe has revealed the devastating environmental and economic impact that this destruction can cause worldwide. Multiple countries and their communities can be negatively affected by the destruction caused in another. We hope that this research will help guide us to develop a viable, feasible and desirable business model.

Our hearts are with the people of Chile affected by the ongoing devastating fires. At least eleven people have lost their lives and thousands more have lost their homes with nearly 5000 square kilometres of land been burnt away. This also includes agriculture (farmland and animals), native animals, as well as the forest and wine industries. These fires around the world are the reason we’re so passionate about our business model for aerial firefighting, with the sincere hope of finding a way to limit the impact that wildfires can have in so many ways. http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/01/chile-raging-wildfires-displace-thousands-170127144245967.html https://www.theguardian.com/news/2017/feb/01/weatherwatch-hot-dry-conditions-fan-wildfires-in-chile

Here we go! We've all shared a different past, but now we're here, studying in Melbourne, sharing our passion and we're thrilled to be in round 2 of Airbus FYI 2017! Together we're working on a business model in which we hope to utilise existing Airbus assets for aerial firefighting. Good luck to everyone over the next few weeks and all the best! - Aquarius
