Description
The primary aim of our idea is to reduce the uncertainties associated with taxiing operations. Uncertainty in an aircrafts taxiing time gives the controllers no option but to queue up aircrafts for departures and runway crossings so as to maximize runway throughput and ensure no departure slot is lost. This queueing practice leads to lenghty departure queues which are costly in terms of time,fuel and money. As air traffic levels are expected to double over the coming decade, we propose a method to reduce these uncertainties. Our automated taxiing system comprising of the Aircraft Module and the Air traffic Control Module working together to deliver precise predictability of taxiing times. The ATCM assigns conflict-free routes using big data and algorithms to the aircraft. Then the AM using this data and its sensors move the aircraft to conform to these instructions precisely. We believe that our system would give air traffic controllers a profound knowledge of how long an aircraft is going to take to taxi hence giving them the flexibility to coordinate traffic more effectively while maintaining maximum runway throughput, without the cost of time, fuel, emmisions and money.

Let me tell you a story! Once upon a time, there lived a pilot in Nevada who was always late home to his wife and his wife always complained about it. He was always worried and felt bad because of the whole situation. He told one of his friends about the situation and his friend introduced him to 3 young lads who promised they could help get his wife to stop complaining. They eventually built an automatic taxiing sytem and it was incorporated into his aircraft. Since that day, since all the delays that caused him to come home late had been removed, he started coming home in time and he and his wife lived happily ever after!. That's the reason why we put up that picture.:)

In a bid to optimize surface movements, Next Gen has come up with their 4DST( 4 - Dimensional surface trajectory). The system can plan routes efficiently and reduce taxiing times by more than 20%. The problem is that the system has to plan routes in advance with a particular timeframe and with pilots taxiing, there will be accumulated uncertainties in taxiing time which could eventually lead to delays. We hope to reduce this boundary of uncertainties by automating taxiing thereby improving the efficiency of the system in managing ground traffic and eliminating potential delays!!! This is a picture of me after a ton of research at my departmental classroom. And yes it's the research that made my hair so messy;). We hope to start tests and simulations this coming week! A great advancement in our Idea.! Since it's been a while we posted here, I want to share the details of our project.....And I have to say that there is truly a huge influx of data! #Nevadafacts did you know one of the causes of the long departure queues at airports is because the controller releases planes as they request pushback and taxi clearances without actually knowing how many aircrafts are on the queue? We want to reduce the departure queues by keeping more aircraft at the gate when the queue reaches a point that it is no more efficient for an aircraft to taxi ( because the taxiing time is too much). The system will be able to gather data from multiple sources and generate a collision free route and also calculate the time an aircraft will reach its destination( takeoff). If this time is below a point we deem inappropriate, the system will advise the controller to leave the aircraft at the gate. If the time is acceptable the instructions are sent to the flight deck and the aircraft uses the information to taxi itself thereby reducing taxiing time uncertainty ( due to pilots deviations from ATC instructions and other errors) and optimizing taxiing. Because time is very crucial in our project, we can't leave the taxiing in the hands of our dear pilots( though they will still be needed in case something goes wrong ;).) I'll share more updates as soon as possible. Keep the energy flowing!!!!!!

#Nevadafacts did you know that pilot fatigue is a factor in 4 of 5 airplane accidents? Hmmm.......What if planes could taxi automatically in the nearest future,? Like can't you imagine how happy our pilots would be :)haha. It'll also allow them focus on more critical tasks and reduce their workload. This week we're seeing how our idea could benefit pilots as the main users of the technology and the potential problems they'll encounter with it, and of course...........the next time you see your pilot smiling uncontrollably after your flight, be sure to ask if the plane was equipped with ATS (automated taxiing system)!. And we're on the journey of gathering data in order for an aircraft to taxi automatically. Our idea is an algorithm that enables an aircraft to taxi efficiently while reducing unnecessary stops and improving taxi traffic flow. Just finished a fruitful meeting.
