How Airbus is innovating at sea as well as in the air

Mar 09, 2017

Did you know that Airbus engineers were involved in the 35th America’s Cup as Official Innovation Partner of ORACLE TEAM USA? Airbus provides its engineering know-how via a great combination of teamwork and mutual passion. This partnership is based on natural similarities and technology synergies between sailing and flying. Powered by a wing sail and using hydrofoils, the America's Cup Class (AC Class) catamarans use lift to glide above the water. Many Airbus technologies suit perfectly to these flying yachts: advanced numerical aerodynamics, aero elasticity, structural dynamic testing, composite design and manufacturing…but also hydraulic systems, handling qualities, 3D printing, micro-sensors measurements and big data analysis.

Just as Fly Your Ideas students are drawing on insights and inspiration from other industries to produce the best possible ideas, Airbus’ teams are applying leading-edge aeronautical technologies and capabilities to the yacht design to help the team win the prestigious America's Cup for a third consecutive time. Meanwhile, Airbus engineers are also learning from ORACLE TEAM USA about ways of working in a start-up mode and highly agile environment. This has been a wonderful co-innovation opportunity, and a chance to share and develop additional knowledge on both sides.

Watch now to learn more about the AC Class, as ORACLE TEAM USA prepare to defend the trophy in the June 2017 competition.
